Mud Engineer
Job Description
- Knowledgeable on drilling operations (i.e. Drilling, tripping pipe, running casing, cementing, completions, etc).
- Knowledgeable on the drilling fluids circulation system, it's components, and each component's function.
- Knowledgeable on key product properties, applications, and limitations
- Knowledgeable on the properties of the mud (i.e. solids calculations, fluid chemistry, etc.)
- Knowledgeable on the effects of the products/systems on the mud chemistry (i.e. impact on pH, calcium, alkalinity, etc).
- Knowledgeable on the solids control process and equipment and able to explain how various recommendations (i.e. screen size selection, shale shaker settings, etc.) will impact the drilling fluid properties and/or efficiency of solids removal.
- Participate in pre and post well planning and presentations
- Reviews fluids program in order to prepare orders and mixing plans.
- Instruct and supervise crew for mixing and handling of products on site.
- Gathers samples and performs tests to determine trends and identify contaminants.
- Control the drilling fluid within defined specifications I Records test results to identify trends.
- Interprets property-test data to establish required treatment or action.
- Perform complete, accurate and timely well-site analysis of all drilling fluids parameters required by the company and/or the operator.
- Determines cause of fluid, hole, or system problems to assist in treatment recommendation.
- Recognize drilling problems and propose solutions.
- Responsible for staying with the operator to solve any problems which occur at the drilling site until the problem is resolved (Lost Circulation, Gas Kicks, Sever Chemical contamination, etc).
- Determines chemical treatments required to optimize drilling parameters.
- Supervises rig personnel performing chemical additions and recording drilling fluid parameters.
- Manages product inventory to ensure availability.
- Monitors daily drilling operations to reduce or eliminate problems associated with drilling fluids.
- Provide daily drilling fluid reports to the operator's drilling supervisor I Complete reports needed for the final well summary.
- Attend and participate in safety/engineer meetings and brief the drilling crew on any aspect of drilling fluid usage.
- Maintain accurate and timely maintenance of drilling fluids records (Mud Reports, Materials Concentrations Form, Drilling Fluids Recaps and any other records or reports requested by the company and/or operator).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, or Petroleum Engineering, or related fields.
- At least 5 years oil and gas industry in similar position / Scope of work excluding training period.
- Basic Drilling Fluids Certification (Mud School) and IWCF are preferred.
